1 KINGS 12:1–7, 12–17; JOB 12:12
In 2010, a newspaper published a report featuring life lessons from eight senior citizens. It highlighted how ageing can bring emotional and social knowledge, referred to as wisdom.
Wise older people offer valuable life lessons, but a newly crowned king in the Bible overlooked this.
King Solomon had just died, and in 1 Kings 12:3, the assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam with a petition. They asked the new king to lighten the harsh labour and heavy taxes his father had demanded. In return, they promised to loyally serve him.
The young king ignored wise advice, chose foolish counsel, and increased the people’s burden. This cost him most of his kingdom.
We all benefit from the advice of those with experience, especially those who have followed God and listened to His guidance. Their wisdom is valuable. Let us seek them out and listen to what they have to say.
🙏 I ask You, gracious God, to give Your people knowledge and wisdom. Give them an insatiable hunger to discover and comprehend more of Your truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
