COMPASSION FATIGUE

MATTHEW 9:35–38

The diary that Anne Frank wrote about her family’s years of hiding during World War II made her famous. According to those who knew her, when she was later imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, her compassion for others did not cease. Kenneth Bailey, a scholar, came to the conclusion that Anne never showed signs of “compassion fatigue”.

Compassion fatigue can arise from living in a broken world, especially when our efforts seem not to yield expected results.

Jesus went through towns and villages, teaching, proclaiming the kingdom, and healing diseases. He had compassion for the crowds, who were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Jesus addressed the people’s physical and spiritual needs, challenging His followers to join Him in this work. He wants us to address loneliness, sin, and illness. May we have a heart that mirrors His and express His compassionate concern with the strength of His Spirit.

🙏 In a world filled with heartache, may God give you strength to model the compassion of Jesus.
