YES MEN

2 CHRONICLES 18:5–27

Humans tend to look for information that backs their opinions. Research indicates we are twice as likely to seek supporting information. When we strongly believe in our views, we avoid challenges from opposing ideas.

King Ahab of Israel, when deciding to go to war against Ramoth Gilead with Jehoshaphat, consulted 400 self-appointed prophets who gave favourable answers. Jehoshaphat asked for a true prophet of God, leading Ahab to mention Micaiah, who always brought bad news. Micaiah predicted defeat and chaos for the people.

Reading their experience made me realise how I also have a tendency to ignore good advice if it is not in line with my preferences. Listening to Ahab’s 400 prophets, or “yes men,” had devastating results for him (v. 34). Even when it goes against our own inclinations, may we be open to seeking out and understanding the voice of truth—that is, God’s words recorded in the Bible.

God’s counsel is trustworthy and wise.

🙏Lord, help Your people to seek and heed Your counsel even when it is against their desires or popular thought.
