MARK 10:13–16; ROMANS 5:6
When the teacher called her to the front of the grammar class to analyse a sentence, she panicked. As a new student, she had not learned that aspect of grammar. The class laughed at her.
Instantly, the teacher sprang to her defence and told the students that she could outwrite anyone. The new student began to strive to write as well as he suggested. Eventually, she won a Pulitzer Prize for her writing.
Jesus identified with the defenceless and vulnerable, addressing their needs and avoiding hindering them. He made the Good Samaritan the hero of His parable, offered hope to a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, and protected a woman trapped in adultery. Despite being helpless, Christ sacrificed His life for all of us (Romans 5:6).
We provide the weak and marginalised people with an opportunity to reach their full potential when we stand up for them. We show them we truly love them, and we also, in a little but profound manner, mirror Jesus’ own heart.
