PSALM 104:24–35
The hum produced by the hummingbird’s fast-beat wings gives it its English name. It goes by the names “flower-kisser” (Portuguese) and “flying jewels” (Spanish) in different languages. The Mexican Zapotec term biulu, which means “what remains in the eye,” is one of my favourite names for this bird. You will always remember seeing a hummingbird once you see one.
Hummingbirds are amazing creatures. Why are they so fascinating? Perhaps it is because of their small size (they average two to three inches) or their wings’ 50–200 beats per second.
Psalm 104, written by the psalmist, describes the beauty of nature. He prays for his meditation to be pleasing to God. By observing, rejoicing, and thanking God, we can meditate on His wonders and please Him.
🙏 Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, our strength, and our redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
