PSALM 73:25-26
In a church service, my friend David admits that he does not always sing all the lyrics to the hymns and choruses. He stated, “Singing ‘All I want is Jesus’ when my heart also desires many other things does not seem truthful.” I appreciate his honesty.
Asaph sounds like a man who is spiritually minded and just wants God in verse 25 of Psalm 73. He initially acknowledged that he yearned for the wealth that those around him enjoyed. But as he came closer to God, he saw how foolish it was for him to be envious.
Even though we are mindful of God, we are frequently deterred by other people’s success.
What does this psalm teach us about God that can be helpful when our wishes cause us to miss out on His best? We can see that even though we could be tempted to envy others for their possessions, He is constantly directing us and bringing our attention back to Him. He is our heart’s strength and our constant portion (Psalm 73:26).
The heart ailment of envy can be cured with a regular dose of God’s wisdom.
🙏🏼Lord, we are weak, sinful, and prone to becoming sidetracked from Your best. Help us to get close to You so that You can get close to us in return.
