JOHN 12:12-19; 19:14-16
Every year, between Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent) and Easter (Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection), I am reminded of how rapidly public opinion may change! When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem for the Passover feast, he was greeted by multitudes who chanted for Him to be crowned king. The same people, meanwhile, were demanding that He be crucified by the end of the week.
Within these unstable crowds, I identify myself. When a team is winning, I enjoy cheering for them, but when they start losing, I lose interest. I enjoy being a part of a new and exciting movement, but when the energy shifts to a different section of town, I am ready to move on. When Jesus does the impossible, I want to follow Him, but when He asks me to do anything tough, I back away. When He outsmarts the brilliant people and outmaneuvers the powerful, it is simple to trust Him. But I pause when He starts talking about suffering, sacrifice, and death.
I would like to think I would have followed Jesus to the cross, but I have my reservations. After all, what makes me believe I would speak up for Him among a mob of His adversaries if I do not do so in places where it is safe?
Thank You, Jesus, for dying for for unstable followers so that we can become committed followers.
