TOO BUSY TO KNOW GOD?

LUKE 10:38-42

I was once waiting for a bus when a bystander who spotted me reading my Bible began to tell me about his life before he came to know Jesus. He said, “I was consumed with myself.” I afterwards discovered Jesus.

I listened as he gave me a rundown of the adjustments he had made to his life and some of the admirable things he had accomplished. However, given that everything he had said to me had to do with his busyness for God and not his connection with God, I was not surprised when he said, “To be honest, I thought I would feel better about myself by now.”

I believe Martha, a figure from the New Testament, would have understood the man’s emotions. She went about doing what she believed to be the important things after inviting Jesus to come to her house. She was unable to concentrate on Jesus as a result, though. Martha felt justified in asking Jesus to reprimand Mary for her lack of involvement. Many of us make the mistake of being too preoccupied with doing good to take the time to get to know God better.

I gave that man some counsel at the bus stop that was directly taken from Jesus’ comments to Martha in Luke 10:41–42. I advised him to take his time getting to know God and let the Bible lead him in on everything. If we are too busy to spend time with God, we are simply too busy.

Knowing God is so much more than a to-do list.

🙏🏼 Lord Jesus, help us to know You more.
