ECCLESIASTES 5:10-17
Recent widespread flooding has caused many deaths and forced countless Nigerians to flee their homes.
The numerous flood-related deaths and displaced people in Nigeria serve as a stark reminder of Solomon’s notion that wealth perishes through misfortune (Ecclesiastes 5:14). Our most prized possessions may be lost through accidents, theft, or natural calamities. Even if we are able to keep them safe, there is no way we can take them to heaven with us (vs.15). Working only to gain things that will eventually vanish is pointless.
There is something we can take with us that does not spoil. We can accumulate eternal heavenly wealth. Following virtues like generosity (Matthew 19:21), humility (5:3), and spiritual tenacity (Luke 6:22-23) will produce lasting benefits.
What kind of treasure do we have? Does the kind of treasure we desire have an earthly expiration date? Or, are we looking for what is up there, where Christ is seated at God’s right hand? (Colossians 3:1)
