THE SPY

MATTHEW 26:14-16

In Christianity, Holy Wednesday marks the Negotiations of Judas, a secret spy among the disciples. It is also known as Spy Wednesday, or Good Wednesday (in Western Christianity), and Great and Holy Wednesday (in Eastern Christianity).

We may well not understand Judas until we pay careful attention to the small ways in which we betray Christ each day. I am convinced that Judas had no idea his betrayal of Jesus was so heinous. As he went out to the chief priests on Holy Wednesday, one can easily imagine how he excused betraying Jesus: “I am really not betraying Him in any way. That is not the case. It would be a betrayal if I handed Him over to be killed. It would be a betrayal if I killed Him myself. But now I am just directing those who are searching for Him to where they can find Him.”

The truth is that the story of Christ’s final week on earth introduces a slew of characters through whom each person reading the Gospel can comprehend his or her own personal guilt.

May we all be able to see beyond Judas’ crime. Today, may we see the many spies in the church.

🙏🏼 Lord, make us true disciples and not spies.
