THE PLACE OF THE ROD

PROVERBS 13:24

Today, let us shake the tables. It is necessary to do that once in a while.

Discipline is necessary for good upbringing. Proverbs 13:24 is all about exercise of parental authority and child discipline. Many have neglected this all in the name of societal development and the society has become worse for it.

While child abuse is unlawful, immoral, and deplorable. Loving discipline, however, is absolutely necessary to produce mature, well-rounded adults who can handle the give-and-take of relationships and a competitive world. A self-willed, undisciplined child grows up to be a danger to society.

When a child flies into a rage, or breaks something, or displays behaviour that is obviously malicious and wrong, there is nothing wrong with smacking the child sharply once or twice on the buttocks. That is much better than just berating him/her for an hour verbally. It is much better to administer punishment than to let children think they can get away with doing what is wrong.

The Bible is also one of the most effective strategies parents have available to them for disciplining their children. However in order to do so, parents themselves must take the time to be intimately acquainted with the Word of God as well as living what it teaches. The scriptures set deep in a child’s heart at an early age and will still beckon them when they become adults. Speak the scriptures towards specific behaviour when disciplining your children in the home. It is far more better than cursing them angrily.

And always remember that children who are raised to respect the authority of their parents/guardians are more likely to deal effectively with other authorities in their lives.
