THE OPINIONS OF EXPERTS?

JOHN 5:31–40

There is an “uncanny ability of experts to get things hopelessly, cataclysmically wrong,” according to Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby. A review of some events may give us a picture of why he holds to that opinion. For example, the renowned inventor Thomas Edison once predicted that talking pictures would never take the place of silent ones. In 1928, Henry Ford also said people are growing too smart to fight another war. Numerous other forecasts made by “experts” have also fallen short. Of course, intelligence has its limitations.

Jesus warned religious leaders of his time that they were relying on the Scriptures for eternal life, but they were missing the heart of the matter. He warned them that these scriptures testify about Himself, but they refused to come to Him for life, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of His teachings.

As each new year begins and seasons change, predictions can range from terrifying to optimistic, often with confidence and authority. However, our confidence lies in the One at the heart of the Scriptures, who holds a firm grip on our future.

🙏 Lord Jesus, whenever we are troubled or alarmed, help us to seek You.
