MATTHEW 21:12–16
Italy’s government and museum officials protested after an advertiser changed a picture of Michelangelo’s well-known marble statue of the biblical figure David. According to a cultural official, it would be illegal to depict David with a military gun over his shoulder rather than his slingshot—”like taking a hammer to it or worse.”
It was prophesied that a descendant of shepherd-songwriter and soldier-king David would defeat Israel’s adversaries. It was anticipated that Jesus, the Son of David, would lead an uprising against the Roman oppressors. Rather, He made His Father’s house a place of prayer for people from all over the world. The authorities of Israel were incensed because they thought Jesus was not the Messiah they had been seeking. They demanded that the hands and feet of Israel’s genuine glory be hammered by Roman executioners.
Jesus let Himself be hung on a cross of humiliation, wounded and disgraced, rather than stopping them. The only way to know that the real Son of David had triumphed over His adversaries out of love and recruited the children of all nations to share the gospel would be through His resurrection.
