Love was more important to a young married couple than wealth. Both were having trouble coming up with a gift that would truly express how much they cared for one another as Christmas drew near. At last, on Christmas Eve, Della bought a platinum chain for Jim’s watch that he had inherited from his grandfather and father by selling her long, knee-length hair. On the other hand, Jim had recently sold the watch to pay for an expensive set of combs for Della’s hair.
O. Henry called the couple’s story ‘The Gift of the Magi.’ He affirmed that despite their gifts being useless and appearing foolish on Christmas morning, their love made them among the wisest.
Precious gifts were presented by the magi. The material presents were not as valuable as the adoration they offered the King of Kings, however, from a bowed head and bent knee.
Jim and Della’s plans did not go too well, but they made the greatest loving sacrifices for each other.
In what ways might we honour God today?
🙏Heavenly Father, please guide us to know what it means to offer what money cannot buy, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
