JONAH 3:10–4:4
Migaloo, Australia’s first albino humpback whale, which was first spotted in 1991, is thought to be over forty feet long and so uncommon that Australia has enacted legislation to protect him.
The Bible describes a rare “huge fish” that swallowed a runaway prophet, Jonah. God instructed Jonah to take a message of judgement to Nineveh, but Jonah chose not to. He repented from the fish’s belly and preached to the Ninevites, who also repented. Jonah was not happy, and his anger grew, leading to suicidal prayer.
The fish is not central to Jonah’s story. It concerns both the character of the God who seeks us and our humanity. The apostle Peter said the Lord is patient with us, wanting everyone to come to repentance rather than perish (2 Peter 3:9). God extends His love to you and me, to sulky prophets, and to vicious Ninevites.
🙏 May the Father’s limitless and unfailing love surround you today and always, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
