A 2019 study showed that mothers and grandmothers significantly influence spiritual development in United States believers, with two-thirds citing their mothers and one-third acknowledging their grandmother’s role.
Paul noted in his epistolary correspondence with his protégé Timothy that his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois served as role models for Timothy’s faith (2 Timothy 1:5). It is a sweet little anecdote that illustrates how two women influenced one of the early church leaders. Paul’s advice to Timothy was to continue in what he had learned from infancy (3:14–15)—another example of their effect.
A strong spiritual heritage is a valuable gift. But even if our upbringing may not have had the same positive influences as Timothy’s, other people in our lives can significantly shape our spiritual development. It is crucial to model sincere faith and leave a lasting legacy.
