SYNCRETISM

ZEPHANIAH 1:1–6; 2:1–3; 3:17

I went to a wedding a few years ago where two people from different countries were married. While it can be lovely when cultures blend together, this ceremony combined Christian customs with some other worship rites.

Zephaniah the prophet criticised syncretism, a practice where other religions are combined with faith in the one true God. He noted that Judah, a people who worshipped the true God but also embraced pagan culture, was at risk of being driven from their homeland by God.

However, God continues to love His people, and Zephaniah encourages Judah to seek righteousness and humility. The Lord promises future restoration, promising to gather them and bring them home, demonstrating His love and willingness to guide His people.

Some examples of syncretism in Christianity today are the fusion of Christianity with the “culture of success” and the incorporation of songs (lyrics and tunes) from other backgrounds into Christian worship services.

It is easy to criticise cases of clear syncretism, such as the wedding I was at. However, the truth is that we all often confuse cultural expectations with the truth of God. To compare our views to the reality of God’s Word and then to stand for that truth with love and confidence, we need the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Anyone who worships our Father in the Spirit and in truth is welcomed with open arms (see John 4:23–24).

🙏 Lord, deliver your people from the subtle grip of syncretism.
