ZECHARIAH 10:1-8
An endangered language that resembles a bird song is being restored on La Gomera, one of the smallest of the Canary Islands. Schoolchildren and visitors are discovering how whistling was formerly used to communicate over distances of up to two miles in a land of deep valleys and steep ravines. Shepherds at La Gomera are also relearning this language of whistling to communicate with their sheep.
The act of whistling seems to occur in the Bible, where God is compared to a shepherd calling to His sheep to gather a lost and dispersed people to Himself (Zechariah 10:8).
“My sheep hear My voice,” Jesus said. (John 10:27). This could be a shepherd’s whistle. Sheep may not understand words, but they can recognise the sound that the shepherd makes when he is around.
Distracting noises and deceptive voices continue to contend for our attention (cf. Zechariah 10:2). However, God can communicate with us in nonverbal ways as well. He reminds us of His guiding, guarding, and soothing presence through occurrences that can be alarming or encouraging.
🙏Father, the world is noisy. Thank You for always calling to us. Help us to recognise Your signal and follow Your leading.
