MARK 15:19–20, 33–39
There is a large cross in front of the altar at the church I attend. It is a representation of the original cross on which Jesus died, the point at which His holiness and our sin collided. God let His sinless Son die there in order to atone for all of our transgressions, whether they be verbal, mental, or physical. Jesus fulfilled the necessary work on the cross to deliver us from the death we deserve (Romans 6:23).
The sight of a cross reminds us of Jesus’ suffering. He was flogged, spit on, and mocked by soldiers. They made Him carry His own cross. He was weak. At Golgotha, nails were hammered through His flesh to keep Him on the cross. Six hours later, Jesus took His final breath, and a centurion who witnessed His death declared Him the Son of GodGod (Mark 15:39).
Think about what the cross means to you the next time you see it. There, God’s Son went through suffering, died, and rose again to guarantee eternal life.
