PSALM 121
People love spending time in the sun, but did you know that too much exposure to the sun can actually make you sick? Overexposure to the sun can lead to sun poisoning, causing symptoms like nausea, headaches, dizziness, and vomiting. Unprotected ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage skin, eyes, the immune system, and even cause cancer. It is crucial to be aware of potential health risks.
The scorching nature of the sun profoundly impacted the understanding of the Lord God as His people’s shade, as the Middle East residents knew the unrelenting heat and needed shelter from its burning rays.
In Psalm 121, the psalmist uses a picture of the Lord as a shade, fostering a heart-level conversation about the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness. This reassures us that the Lord will never leave us, providing a protective covering. Similar to finding shelter under umbrellas, we can find a safe place in the Lord.
We lift our eyes to the “Maker of heaven and earth” (vv. 1–2) because He bestows upon us the gifts of safety, comfort, and renewal, whether it is sunny or rainy outside.
🙏 Heavenly Father, You protect us. Shield us from anything that would take our focus away from You.
