NEHEMIAH 2:11–18
Edward Klee, upon returning to Berlin, found the city he once loved had drastically changed. He later said that returning to a city can be a hit-or-miss experience. It can lead to feelings of sorrow or loss, as we are not the same person we were, nor is the place that was so significant in our lives exactly as it was.
Nehemiah, exiled from Israel, discovered the city’s devastation and sought permission from Persian King Artaxerxes to rebuild the walls. After a night of reconnaissance, he informed the city’s inhabitants of the city’s ruins and burned gates, urging them to rebuild the wall to avoid disgrace and restore the city’s dignity.
Nehemiah’s return to rebuild serves as a powerful lesson for us to address damaged parts of our past and rebuild through faith in Christ, enabling us to move forward.
