PERSONALISE IT

2 CHRONICLES 24:1-2,15-22

Mark appreciated working with teenagers when he was a teacher and coach at a Christian high school. He tried to help them live purposeful, Christlike lives that were shaped by love for God and love for others. His intention was to equip them for a lifetime of serving God. That could only occur as they integrated their belief into every aspect of their lives with the help of the Holy Spirit. When they were freed from the guidance of Christian parents and instructors, those who did not follow Christ floundered.

The tale of King Joash of Judah and his uncle Jehoiada serves as an example of this. The wise advisor named Jehoiada persuaded Joash to lead a life that glorifies God (2 Chronicles 24:11,14).

Joash’s failure to adopt a honourable lifestyle as his own was the problem. King Joash deserted the house of the LORD after Jehoiada’s death (v. 18) and started practicing pagan religion. He had Jehoiada’s son murdered after adopting evil (vv. 20–22).

It can be beneficial and helpful to have someone in our lives who will lead us toward faith and Christlikeness. Knowing the Lord personally and learning to rely on the Holy Spirit as our guide will be much greater (Galatians 5:16). That makes our faith personal.

While other people’s faith inspires us, our own faith transforms us.

🙏🏼 Thank You, Lord, for the individuals in our lives who encourage us to follow You. Help us to rely more on Your Holy Spirit to lead us rather than on them.
