PALM SUNDAY

JOHN 12:12-19

Have you ever been treated badly by those you thought loved you?

Jesus enters Jerusalem with great acclaim, despite his previous opposition to public praise. He acknowledges his imminent death and agrees to be hailed as the Messiah. Jesus knows that he will reign from the cross, as the people who now acclaim him will soon abandon him and lead him to Calvary. The olive branches will turn into thorns, the palms into whips, and the cheers into cruel mockeries.

The hearts of those who acclaimed Christ as King of Israel had their own expectations of the Messiah. Some were disappointed by Jesus’s presentation of Himself as the Messiah and King of Israel.

The experience of receiving Jesus with palms can help us reflect on our own understanding of Jesus and His reign. We may be disappointed by the slow pace of redemption and desire for quick triumph, confusing our plans with God’s. However, God has His own ways and plans.

🙏Lord Jesus, as we surrender to your will, we wave our palm branches and declare that you are our King and we are your people.
