1 CORINTHIANS 12:4–14
In Mexico, and in Nigeria where I am from, maize, sometimes known as corn, is a staple grain. In contrast to Nigeria, Mexico seems to have a wider variety. Cobs come in various colours, including yellow, brown, red, and black, as well as the ones with a gorgeous dotted pattern. However, the dotted cobs are typically not eaten by city dwellers. According to scholar and restaurateur Amado Ramírez, people consider consistency to be synonymous with quality. However, the spotted cobs are very tasty.
The church of Christ is akin to a spotted ear of corn, a body with different gifts. Paul uses this metaphor to emphasise that while we are all one body with the same God, each of us has a unique gift. Our diversity is helping each person demonstrate God’s generosity and creativity.
We must strive to maintain unity in faith and purpose despite our diverse abilities, backgrounds, languages, and countries, as we share the same Creator who delights in the variety of our gifts.
🙏 Father, may Your people make every effort to be one, respecting and valuing each other and their various gifts and talents.
