OBSESSIVE COLLECTORS

LUKE 12:13-21

Many people enjoy shopping. They simply can not stop themselves from buying, buying, buying. The quest for the best deal is a global trend. Japan, Saudi Arabia, France, the Uk, the United States, and other countries have big shopping malls. The surge in in-store and online sales demonstrates that buying is an universal phenomenon.

Shopping may be enjoyable. And there is nothing wrong with looking for the real deal and appreciating the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. However, we may lose concentration when we become concerned with acquiring material goods.

In our text, Jesus warns His listeners to beware of covetousness. He made it plain that one’s life is not defined by the quantity of his possessions. He went on to narrate a parable about a wealthy man (the rich fool) who trusted in his wealth but was unconcerned about his relationship with God.

How can we learn to bridle in our desire for material possessions? Here are some helpful hints: Consider material possessions as a gift from God to be used properly (Matt. 25:14-30). Give to the Lord’s work as well as to those in need (2 Cor. 9:7; Prov. 19:17). And never forget to be humble, refusing to put your hope in wealth (1 Tim. 6:17).

It is far better to be rich in God than in goods.

🙏🏼 Lord, our hearts yearn for “things” all the time. Teach us not to become consumed with accumulating more and more material possessions. Instead, may we come to understand what it means to be “rich” toward You.
