As the ferryboat moved, the lady became ill due to seasickness, and her husband felt queasy himself. He told himself, “Just stare at the horizon.” Sailors advise such to regain perspective.
Fear and restlessness can be overcome by focusing on the distant yet steady point of our destiny.
The writer of Hebrews reflects on the discouragement of his readers, who have experienced persecution. He reminds them of other faith-based individuals who endured extreme trials and were left homeless, anticipating a better future. The writer urges them to focus on God’s promises, as they are looking for the heavenly city, not an earthly one.
Seeing our current life from the standpoint of the life to come is what it is all about, not disregarding the world we live in and focusing entirely on heaven.
Our current problems are transitory. Looking towards the horizon of God’s promises gives us the reference point we require.
