JOHN 4:9-14, 27-29
Following the issuance of his license, Mark’s parents received several calls from people who had found it. They warned him to be more careful and not to leave it behind.
However, it is not necessarily a bad thing to leave things behind. In John 4, a woman had come to a well to draw water. But that day, when she met Jesus, her purpose abruptly changed. She quickly returned to tell the others what Jesus had said to her after leaving her water jar behind (vv. 28–29). Telling others about the man she had just met was more important than her actual desire for water.
Leaving behind things that do not provide long-term satisfaction may be necessary for us to live a new life as followers of Jesus Christ. What we once yearned for cannot be compared to the life and “living water” that Jesus provides.
🎶’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
and to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise,
and to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”
