Parenting is one of many ways people make lasting contributions to this world.
One way we can carry out our duties as parents is the intentional training of our children. We must spend time teaching our children about the Lord and how to live in this world. We should not assume that they will learn these things on their own or from their peers or the culture that surrounds them.
While we expect the church to teach them the ways of the Lord, we are to reinforcement what is taught at home. The church or Christian school cannot be depended upon to take the role of family leadership. That is not the way God intended it to be.
Like Abraham, whom God could vouch for (Genesis 18:19), parents must play their roles to leave a lasting legacy.
