JUST A STONE’S THROW AWAY

JOHN 7:53–8:11

Religious leaders could not have known they were bringing an adulterous woman within a stone’s throw of mercy when they led her towards Jesus. Discrediting Him was their aim. They might argue that He was violating Mosaic law if He urged them to let the woman go. The masses that followed Him would have disregarded His teachings of kindness and love, though, if He had sentenced her to death.

Jesus challenged the accusers by writing on the ground instead of answering directly. During questions, he invited those who had never sinned to throw the first stone and then began writing again. The next time He looked up, all the accusers had left.

Jesus, the only sinless one, offered mercy to a woman, stating that he did not condemn her but advised her to leave her sinful life.

No one is throwing stones today; go and be changed because of God’s mercy. This should offer you hope, regardless of whether you need forgiveness for judging others or want to know that no sin is beyond His grace.
