JOY AFTER GRIEF

JOHN 16:16–22

Agnes’ pregnancy was marked by complications, leading to a caesarean section. Despite the ordeal, Agnes quickly forgot her pain when she held her newborn son, as joy replaced her anguish.

The passage from John 16:21 states that a woman experiencing pain during childbirth forgets her anguish due to joy when her baby is born. Jesus used this to illustrate that despite grief due to His imminent departure, joy would return when they saw Him again.

To the delight of His followers, upon His resurrection, Jesus walked and taught them for a further forty days before departing once more (Acts 1:3). He, however, did not abandon them in sorrow. Joy would be given to them by the Holy Spirit upon His arrival (John 16:7–15; Acts 13:52).

As believers, we have the assurance that one day we will see Jesus face-to-face, and we will forget our earthly anguish. Until then, the Lord has given us His Spirit, bringing joy and peace.

And while we remain here on earth, let us expect that one day our sorrow will be turned to joy!

🙏 We thank you, Lord Jesus, for the joy you give to us.
