IDENTIFICATION ERROR

MATTHEW 16:13-20

John, David’s youngest sibling, was born while he was a college student. When he reached university age, this age gap created an amusing situation. David accompanied him and their mum on his first visit to his university campus. People initially mistook them for John’s grandmother and father when they arrived. They eventually stopped correcting them. No matter what they said or did, this amusing case of mistaken identification overshadowed their true relationships.

The Pharisees were questioned by Jesus regarding His identity (Matthew 22:42). Their response, “the son of David,” was correct but insufficient when it came to the crucial question of who the Messiah was. According to the Bible, the Messiah would ascend to power and sit on His father David’s throne. However, Jesus explained to them that even though David would be Christ’s ancestor, David referred to Him as “Lord.”

Peter correctly responded when asked a similar question. He said Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16). The significance of the issue of Jesus’ identification continues to outweigh all others, and it is crucial that we comprehend Him correctly at all times.

Making the wrong assumption about Jesus’ identity is the riskiest error of all.

🙏🏼 Thank You Lord Jesus for being our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.
