South African Fredie Blom was born in Adelaide, Eastern Cape, and while he was still young he moved to Cape Town. A significant part of his family died in the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.
Blom spent most of his life working as a labourer in the construction sector and on a farm during the apartheid period. He was not literate and never attended school as a child.
Although his claim of his birthday (May 8, 1904) was never verified, his 116th birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic was widely covered. He died August 22, 2020 at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town of natural causes.
When asked for the secret of his longevity, Blom said, “There is only one thing, it is God. He’s got all the power…He holds me.”
No matter how many years we live, life’s challenges will come knocking at our door. However, God reaches out to us and holds us as He assured His people in Isaiah 41:10. He gathers us and holds us in His strong, but tender hand.
