COLOSSIANS 3:1-14
A well-known apparel retailer insists that its salespeople dress up like the models in the store displays who promote the company’s products. “Guarding their brand” is the term for this practice. The theory is that buyers will be more willing to buy items because they want to look like the people who are wearing them.
It is easy to be misled into believing that by wearing the same clothes as beautiful individuals, we can “buy” approval. Retailers want us to assume that looking beautiful makes us more desirable.
We may be deceived into believing that making ourselves appealing to the world will help us gain followers for Christ. The Bible, on the other hand, is very explicit about what God values most. In character, he wants us to emulate Jesus. We are being conformed to His image, thus Jesus is our “brand” (Romans 8:29). When we put on Christ’s characteristics, such as tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, love, and so on, we attract others to Him.
We should guard and reflect the image of God, which is being developed in us through Christ, rather than polishing and safeguarding our own image.
