GOOD MEDICINE

EPHESIANS 4:25–32; PROVERBS 17:22

In Lagos, Nigeria, traffic fights are often caused by careless driving, rising tempers, and foul language among taxi and minibus drivers. However, a traffic incident took a different turn when a bus was almost hit by a careless taxi driver. The bus driver relaxed, smiled broadly at the guilty-looking taxi driver, and the tension diffused. The taxi driver then apologised, smiled back, and moved away, demonstrating the power of a smile in resolving conflicts.

Smiles have a significant impact on brain chemistry, releasing endorphins that have a relaxing effect. They can diffuse tension within ourselves and others. The Bible encourages us to be kind and compassionate, reducing bitterness, anger, and malice. Therefore, it is important to smile and express kindness to others, as it can help diffuse tension and promote a healthier environment.

Maintaining a cheerful heart is crucial for personal happiness and well-being, especially when rage, tension, or bitterness threaten our relationships with the Lord and others.
