MATTHEW 1:18–23
“Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ at my right, Christ at my left”… When I read Matthew’s account of Jesus’ birth, these hymn lyrics—penned by the fifth-century Celtic Christian St. Patrick—resound in my head. They reassure me that I am never alone and feel like a loving hug.
Matthew’s account emphasises the centrality of God dwelling with His people, quoting Isaiah’s prophecy of a child called Immanuel, meaning “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14). This truth is central to Matthew’s gospel, beginning and ending with Jesus’ words to His disciples, “I am with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).
St. Patrick’s lyrics emphasise the presence of Christ within believers, encouraging them to trust in His promises, seek His peace in difficulty, and express gratitude for His gracious work in their lives during moments of joy and celebration.
Jesus, Immanuel— God with us. God is by our side.
🙏Thank You, Father God, for sending Your Son to share Your divinity with us. May we feel Your presence always.
