NUMBERS 13:25–14:9
The Israelites, encamped near Mt. Sinai for two years, were nearing the promised land of Canaan. God instructed twelve spies to assess the Canaanites and their people. Ten of the spies believed they could not conquer the land because of the strength and cities of the inhabitants, while two believed they could.
The ten compared giants to themselves, while Caleb and Joshua compared them to God, and the giants were reduced to size.
Unbelief hinders us from overcoming challenges like impregnable cities and impossible giants, focusing on them, and comparing them to human resources. Faith, on the other hand, acknowledges these difficulties but focuses on God’s presence and power, allowing us to overcome them.
What are our “giants”—habits, temptations, difficult marriages, or drug-abusing children? Comparing ourselves to these challenges can overwhelm us. Faith focuses on the greatness of an ever-present, all-powerful God rather than the challenges we face.
