FIRST THINGS FIRST

1 TIMOTHY 4:12–16

When you fly, an airline staff gives a safety talk that covers what to do in the event that cabin pressure is lost, just before or shortly after the aircraft takes off. It is explained to passengers that oxygen masks should be put on by them before assisting others. How come? Because you must first take care of yourself before you can assist anyone else.

Paul emphasised the importance of maintaining spiritual health before serving others. He reminded Timothy of his responsibilities, including addressing false teachings and correcting wrong doctrines. To discharge his duties well, Timothy needed to closely monitor his life and doctrine, prioritising his relationship with the Lord.

Paul’s advice to Timothy also applies to us. People who do not know the Lord come into our lives every day. We maintain a healthy connection with God when we first replenish our spiritual oxygen through spending time in God’s Word, prayer, and the Holy Spirit’s assistance. Then, we will be spiritually aware and ready to assist others.

🙏 O God, open Your Word to us. Let us breathe in its freshness before we go out to be Your light to the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
