DURING OUR STORMS

MARK 4:35–41

Waves crashed, lightning flashed, and the wind howled. He believed he was going to die. They spent too much time out on the lake where they had gone fishing. A swift-moving storm blew across their little boat as the sun sank. To prevent it from capsizing, his grandfather told him to sit in front. His heart was filled with terror. Somehow, nevertheless, he started to pray. He was fourteen years old.

He is unsure if he has ever felt a greater sense of God’s presence than he did that stormy night.

In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus instructs his disciples to cross a stormy lake. Despite their initial fear, Jesus calms the water and guides them to deeper faith.

Jesus encourages us to trust Him in our storms; sometimes He miraculously stills the winds and waves, and sometimes steadily guides our hearts, reminding us that He has the power to calm the waves.

Hymn:

The winds and the waves shall obey my will,

Peace, be still!

Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea,

Or demons, or men, or whatever it be,

No waters can swallow the ship where lies

The Master of ocean, and earth and skies;

They all shall sweetly obey my will,

Peace, be still!

They all shall sweetly obey my will,

Peace, peace, be still!

(Peace! Be Still! by Mary Ann Baker – 1874)

🙏Lord Jesus, help Your children trust that You are the Master of the storm, to place our faith in You when life’s winds blow fiercely.
