DEPENDENCE DAY

JOHN 15:5

Nigeria secured independence from Great Britain on October 1, 1960. As the Queen’s representative at the Nigerian independence celebrations, Princess Alexandra of Kent presented the nation with its Freedom Charter.

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the first Prime Minister of Nigeria, read a speech proclaiming the nation’s independence alongside Princess Alexandria and Sir James Robertson in what was then called the “Race Course” (Tafawa Balewa Square).

All ages are attracted to independence. It implies freedom from outside influence, control, assistance, and support. Therefore, it is not surprising that teenagers express interest in becoming independent. Senior citizens wish to keep their independence, and many adults aspire to being “independently wealthy.” It sounds fantastic, but the question of whether anyone has ever been truly independent is one for another time and place.

Desiring to be independent on a personal or political level is one thing; attempting to pursue spiritual independence is problematic. Instead, we need to acknowledge and embrace our profound spiritual need. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. Anyone who relies on Him and remains in Him produces much fruit. Without Him, we are powerless (John 15:5).

We are completely and eternally dependent on the One who sacrificed Himself to set us free. Our “dependency day” is every day.

Dependency on our powerful God is where we derive our greatest strength.

🙏 Lord, strengthen us as we depend on You.
