1 PETER 2:13-25
My daughter’s screams came from the backseat while I was driving. She replied that her brother had grabbed her arm when I tried to find out what had happened. He said that she had pinched him, so he grabbed her arm to protect himself. She said that she pinched him as a result of his offensive remarks.
Unfortunately, this trend, which is prevalent among children, can also be seen in interactions between adults. When one person insults another, the offended party responds by using harsh language. A fresh insult is hurled in retaliation by the first perpetrator. In no time at all, the relationship has been wrecked by rage and harsh words.
According to the Bible, reckless individuals speak with words that pierce like swords, and harsh words incite rage, but a kind response appeases an angry person (Proverbs 12:18; 15:1). The best response to derogatory remarks or phrases is to occasionally remain silent.
The religious leaders attempted to irritate Jesus with their statements prior to His crucifixion (Matthew 27:41–43), but He took no offense. Instead, according to 1 Peter 2:23, He put His trust in Him who renders just judgment.
We have a way to respond to those who offend us through Jesus’ example and the assistance of the Spirit. We do not have to use words as weapons because we can rely on the Lord.
🙏🏻 Lord Jesus, give me self-control through Your Holy Spirit when I am tempted to retaliate with words.
