BORROWED BLESSINGS

PSALM 24:1

Thank God for His blessings! But do you know that the blessings you have are not your own? They are borrowed. In fact, everything belongs to God – the land, animals, people, time, money, abilities, the air that sustains our lives all come from (and belong to) God. “For in Him we live, and move, and have our being…” (Acts 17:28)

As King David received the offerings from the people of Israel for the building of God’s temple in Jerusalem, he prayed, “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.” (1 Chronicles 29:14-16)

The Bible makes it clear that even the power to get wealth and earn a living come from Him (Deuteronomy 8:18). Realising that all we have is borrowed helps us to loosen our grip on the things of this world and live with open hands and hearts – giving freely to God and men because we are thankful for the kindness we receive daily from Him.

God is a generous giver – so generous that He even gave up His Son for us all (Romans 8:32). Let us make no mistakes to withhold His blessings because the owner can always take back His own, even without our permission.
