DEUTERONOMY 32:1–12
My friend Joseph compared God to an eyelid, leaving me surprised and wondering what he meant by that.
“Explain further to me,” I said. We had been studying uncommon biblical imagery together, such as God as a labouring mother (Isaiah 42:14), but this one was new to me. He directed my attention to Deuteronomy 32, where Moses commends God for the way He provides for His people. God keeps His people safe and secure, treating them as the apple of His eye, according to verse 10.
The word “apple” in the text means pupil, and the eyelid is responsible for encircling and guarding it. God is like the eyelid, instinctively protecting the eye from danger, removing dirt and dust, keeping sweat out, lubricating the eyeball, and closing for rest.
I could not help but give thanks to God for all the metaphors He has provided us with to help us comprehend His love for us, even as I thought about the image of God as an eyelid. We can give thanks to God for His gentle protection and care for us when we close our eyes at night and open them in the morning.
🙏Thank you, Lord, for guarding us just as the eyelid guards the eye.
