BITTER ORANGES

EPHESIANS 4:31

Bitter orange extract is often used in weight-loss supplements. But because it raises blood pressure and has been linked to heart attacks and strokes, it has been banned in some places. Can you just liken these negative effects to what bitterness does in us?

Imagine Naomi asking people to call her “Mara,” meaning bitter. (Ruth 1:20-21) She grew in bitterness because of her negative experiences.

Which man on earth has not faced disappointment and been tempted toward bitterness? People say things that are hurtful, expectations are not met, or demand from others get us irritated. When we admit to ourselves and God what is happening deep in our hearts, our compassionate Gardener can help us dig up any roots of bitterness – whether they are still small or have been growing for long – and can replace them with a sweet, joyful spirit.
