PSALM 46
My friend and I sat in the sand near the waters, watching waves curl and ripple. He expressed his love for the waters that keep moving without him changing position.
Many people struggle to stop their efforts, fearing that halting them will lead to a loss of self or expose them to the constant realities they strive to avoid.
Over the years, many people, notably reformer Martin Luther, have found inspiration in Psalm 46. He really used this psalm as the foundation for the well-known song “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”
In Psalm 46:8-9, God showcases His omnipotence, demonstrating His ability to cease wars, break the bow, shatter the spear, and burn shields with fire.
The words, “Be still, and know that I am God,” follow in verse 10.
Knowing God while running around is certainly possible, but the psalmist’s call to be still invites us to a different kind of knowing—a knowing that we can stop and still be because God never stops; a knowing that it is God’s power that provides us with ultimate worth, security, and tranquillity.
🙏 Dear God, help your people to find their rest in you.
