BE STILL

PSALM 46:10

Eric Liddell, who was memorialised in the film Chariots of Fire, finished his studies and returned to China to become a missionary soon after his Olympic victory in 1924. He worked as a science and sports tutor at Tianjin’s Anglo/Chinese College in addition to his religious duties.

When World War II broke out, Liddell sent his family to Canada for safety, but he stayed in China. Soon after, Liddell and other foreign missionaries were detained by the Japanese. He developed what doctors believe was a brain tumor after months in prison.

A band would play near the hospital were he was admitted every Sunday afternoon, so one day Liddell requested that they perform the hymn “Be Still, My Soul.” I am wondering if he pondered the words while he listened.

He died three days later as a result of his condition.

Psalm 46:10 tells us to “be still…” We can relax in our darkest moments because our Lord overcame death on our behalf. Allow Him to soothe your deepest worries by being still.

The noise of our tribulations are drowned by God’s comforting whisper.

🙏🏼Lord, teach us to be still before You.
