JAMES 3:3–12
On a Sunday night in September 1666, a small fire broke out in Thomas Farriner’s bakery, leading to the Great Fire of 1666. The fire left over 70,000 people homeless and levelled four-fifths of London, demonstrating the devastating impact of such a small fire.
The Bible warns of a small but destructive fire: the tongue.
Our words can be constructive. Paul advises us to have conversations full of grace, seasoned with salt, to build up others, just as salt flavours our food (Colossians 4:6).
Our words, with the Holy Spirit’s help, can inspire those in need, encourage faith growth, and encourage those seeking salvation, thereby extinguishing fires rather than igniting them.
