1 SAMUEL 16:1-7
Arie van’t Riet, a retired physicist, uses unorthodox methods to produce works of art. He assembles dead animals and plants of various kinds and then x-rays them. He adds colour to specific areas of his images after scanning the generated x-rays into a computer. The inner complexity of flowers, fish, birds, reptiles, and monkeys is revealed in his artwork.
A perspective from the inside is usually more interesting and important than one from the outside. Eliab appeared to Samuel at first to have the potential to succeed Saul as king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:6). However, God forbade Samuel from focusing on Eliab’s outward appearance. Eliab got passed over in favour of David as the next king of Israel by God.
When God looks at us, He is more concerned with the state of our soul than the features of our face, and our hearts than our height. He does not consider us to be too old, young, small, or huge. He focuses on the important issues, such as how we respond to His love for us and how we care about other people (Matthew 22:37–39). According to Second Chronicles 6:30, God has access to human hearts. What does God see when He examines our hearts?
