ACTS 2:1–12, 42–47
Maya, the five-year-old daughter of my friend David, approaches playtime in a unique way. She enjoys creating new communities by combining dolls from various playsets. In her imagination, everything is part of the whole. Her people are these. Despite their diverse sizes and forms, she feels that they are happiest when they are together.
Her inventiveness serves as a reminder of God’s plan for the church. Luke records that people from every nation under heaven were gathered on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:5). Though these people were from diverse nations and spoke different languages, the Holy Spirit’s presence made them a new community: the church. They would then be regarded as one body, bound together by Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Through teaching from the apostles, fellowship, meal sharing, and prayer (v. 42), the new church that God established in Acts 2 exhibited an unprecedented sense of community across national and ethnic lines.
The Holy Spirit continues to bridge the gaps between people groups, and although we may not always understand or get along, as followers of Christ, we belong together.
🙏 Thank you, Jesus, for sacrificing your life for mankind and bringing the church together as one.
