PROVERBS 22:1
When the “African lion” began barking instead of roaring, zoo visitors were disgusted. Staff at the zoo claimed they could not afford to purchase a genuine lion, so instead they dressed up a Tibetan mastiff – a very huge dog – as one. It goes without saying that the zoo’s reputation has been damaged, and people may hesitate to visit it in the future.
Reputation is fragile; once destroyed, it is difficult to repair. A good reputation is frequently sacrificed in favour of wealth, fame, or authority. We learn from Proverbs 22:1 that what really matters is who we are, not what we have.
We bear Jesus’ name because we are His followers. Because of His love for us, we are to make effort to conduct ourselves in a way that reflects His likeness in both our words and deeds.
