MARK 1:40–45
Dr. Paul Brand, a pioneer medical missionary to India, witnessed the stigma surrounding leprosy firsthand. During an appointment, he touched a patient, causing tears to stream down his face. An attendant explained that these tears were tears of joy, because nobody has touched that patient for years.
Jesus encountered a man with leprosy, a skin disease that required him to live outside his community. He had to call out “Unclean!” to avoid contact with healthy people. Despite his physical illness, Jesus’ compassion and healing power made the man feel accepted, demonstrating that even in the face of isolation, Jesus could heal.
God provides us with opportunities to demonstrate compassion and grace in a way that is kind and respectful. People who are injured might be reminded of our concern and care by the simple, healing power of human contact.
